Summary/Abstract: The text attempts to present Laurie A. Paul’s most important theses concerning transformative experiences. She describes these experiences as an experience of a special kind, the characteristics of which – occurrence in situations that are completely new to a given person and the power to influence personal preferences – cast doubt on the rationality and authenticity of the most important life choices. Transformative experiences are discussed using the example of procreative decisions. Paul’s theory and the alternative theories of Edna Ullmann-Margalit and Agnes Callard allow for problematizing the results of sociological and psychological research on reproductive decisions obtained so far by noticing the dynamic changes of the self experienced as a result of deciding to have a child and causing a discontinuity in preferences and criteria for assessing one’s life situation.
