THE CHALLENGE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE ARMED FORCES: FROM LETHAL AUTONOMOUS WEAPONS TO EVERYDAY ROUTINE

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the multifaceted nature of military artificial intelligence.Military AI is defined by particular examples of computer systems carrying out tasks thatwould otherwise be performed by humans. The article explores the hypothesis that, in theshort term, AI in the armed forces may assume a more significant role in performing tasksthat are not directly related to weapon systems. Innovative and high-profile issues – such asautonomous weapons or military robotics – will have a smaller real impact on conflicts inthe coming years.
