Summary/Abstract: Chimney climbing, as represented by the Czech Smokestack-climbers Society (Svaz českých komínářů), has existed in the Czech Republic for over forty years. This study examines the controversies surrounding chimney climbing, including the parody of official structures, legal issues, and perceptions of safety. It analyzes the implications of these controversies for research methodology and situates organized chimney climbing within its socio-political context. The article explores the cultural influences on the subculture's origins, its evolution from a student prank to a formal organization documenting industrial heritage, and the diverse perspectives of its members on legality and safety. The methodology includes oral history interviews with members and potential opponents of chimney climbing. The study also considers the subculture’s use of jargon and symbolism, its relationship to Czech humor and absurdity, and its ambiguous position within broader society.
