GENTRIFICATION IN THE CITIES

Summary/Abstract: Nowadays the cities are the main driving force of generation of economic growth and of innovation. At the same time the cities are places of serious socio-economic and spatial problems, especially such as the problems of degradation of central districts, unemployment, poverty, social exclusion. Because of the fact that sustainable development plays nowadays a very important role in the European Union, it is worth paying attention to the gentrifica¬tion process in cities, which aim is to raise the standard of living in a given area. This paper describes the process of gentrification on selected examples and identifies both its positive and negative aspects.
