Summary/Abstract: The research paper provides a comparative and translation analysis of the specifics of the Georgian and Victorian eras, as shown in English classical novels. A comparison of the key feminine heroines of Jane Austen, William Thackeray, Charlotte Brontë, Frances Burnett, etc., is proposed. Parallels with the heroines of Ukrainian prose (Olha Kobylyanska) are given. Attention is paid to the originality of the characters shown, (in)compliance with the criteria of society, testing as a hint of initiation, persona (according to the Jungian analysis), the role of the princess and/or fairy-tale heroine, the similarity of destinies (including pedagogical activities). The characters of English governess and the English woman-teacher/school-ma’am is distinguished as a linguo-cultural types. As illustrative material, the originals in English, as well as translations into Ukrainian (including author’s own translations of Jane Austen’s novel Mansfield Park), Polish and French, are presented. Attention is paid to linguistic and cultural untranslatabilities.
