Summary/Abstract: This volume is the outcome of a long-standing shared interest in the theme of Byzantine prophecy and other related topics, which has produced a number of books and articles over the last three decades1 , and which has recently resulted in three collaborative events: firstly, a conference on predictive knowledge and divinatory techniques in Late Antiquity and Byzantium organised at the University of Bucharest in 2017, the proceedings of which were published in 20192 ; secondly, a roundtable at the 12th International Congress of Southeast European Studies (Bucharest, 2019) on the “religious rhetoric of power”3 ; finally, a roundtable organised at the 24th International Congress of Byzantine Studies (Venice and Padua, 2022) on prophecy in the Byzantine and post-Byzantine world. The present volume has grown out of that roundtable and combines four papers originally delivered at Padua in August 2022 with four additional contributions. It thus brings together the work of eight well established scholars who have already made a significant contribution to our knowledge of the place of prophecy in the culture of Byzantium and the wider Byzantine world.
