The Diminutivisation of Anthroponyms in European Literature. Multiculturalism and Cultural Transfer

Summary/Abstract: This paper mainly aims to identify the psychological, affective and sociolinguistic motivations that determine the change of the basic form of a literary anthroponym, in our case the evolution towards a diminutive form. The research is based on a comparative analysis between the multicultural elements that influence the process of turning proper names specific to Romanian and European literature into diminutives. There is a certain degree of relativity regarding the use of diminutive forms of proper names in European literature, as they have a twofold character in the process of naming: on the one hand, they denote feelings of affection and, on the other, a certain degree of irony. In order to illustrate the afore mentioned aspects, we begin our analysis with the literary and symbolistic functions of the characters’names, the act of denomination representing a modality through which the characters are created and individualized. The methodology of the present essay is characteristic to the field of onomastics, semantics, stylistics, theory of literary criticism and theory of literature. The corpus of the present work finds its source within the literary creations of European literature.
