Military High Schools during the Interwar Period. An Opportunity for the Affirmation of Young People from Modest Social Backgrounds

Summary/Abstract: The present study aims to present the context in which, during the interwar period, the accessibility of pre-university military education increased. We wish to highlight how the expansion of the network of military high schools was preceded by the creation of a legislative framework that allowed young people from more modest social categories to attend elite educational institutions. We believe that it is necessary to discuss the way in which, once admitted, military pupils, regardless of their background, ethnic origin or religious denomination, received considerable and constant material support, enabling them to continue and complete their studies. We intend to argue that this type of support contributed in an essential way to the formation of generations of young people in the early stages of maturity, who, regardless of their university option, in the military or in the civilian sphere, became examples of good professional practice and social conduct. We would like to highlight the fact that at the level of interwar military high schools, the efficient management of material resources and the support of pupils with limited financial possibilities generated positive results, which allowed the education and training of generations of young people determined to defend the ideal of Greater Romania through sustained effort, intellectual capacity and supreme sacrifice on the battle fields.
