St John Koukouzeles – His Difficult Prosopography

Summary/Abstract: St John Koukouzeles – writer, singer, teacher and musical theoretician – is a significant person in the development of the entire Orthodox Church music. Five aspects related to him are discussed in the present article: his life, his reformative activity in the field of Orthodox music and liturgy, his musical work, his relationships with the hesychasm and his place in the history of Bulgarian music. Each aspect is based on the original sources. Study of Koukouzeles’ prosopography continues to be a challenge for any researcher.
