Summary/Abstract: Panait Istrati is a writer whose work explores the depths of the human soul through stories marked by struggle, freedom, love, and friendship. His novels depict multicultural societies rife with social and identity tensions and feature characters confronted with exclusion and inner conflict. The novel Nerrantsoula belongs to the tradition of travel literature, articulating both physical displacement and symbolic journey. The quest for freedom constitutes a common thread: the characters seek to escape oppressive social norms while aspiring to personal autonomy. The journey becomes a space of transformation—geographical, social, and existential. Settings such as the banks of the Danube or the streets of Alexandria reflect the emotional states of the characters and contribute to their redefinition of identity. Nerrantsoula, a figure of free childhood, refuses to be overwhelmed by the emotions of Marko and Epaminonda, asserting her own trajectory. She and the narrator evolve through encounters, embodying the transformative power of wandering. Istrati endows her story with philosophical depth, blending reflections on the human condition, love, and resilience. Nerrantsoula thus establishes itself as a work where the journey, beyond adventure, becomes a place of introspection and self-reconstruction.
