Summary/Abstract: Polish collections have been enriched with a new picture of the diplomat, bishop, writer andpoet of the Jagiellonian era, Jan Dantyszek (Lat. Ioannes Dantiscus, 1485–1548). The smalloil portrait on board of unknown provenance and authorship is one of only two preservedpainted representations of this prominent personage. As a result of the technical examinationand conservation of the painting, it was determined that the portrait was created after 1654 byan experienced artist, confident in his skills. Comparisons with a similar portrait from around1580, depicting a younger model, revealed that both images had the same prototype, whichcould not be determined. Based on written sources, it can be concluded that the very face ofDantyszek could have been a repetition of a portrait painted ad vivum in 1519 when he wasa diplomat in Barcelona, or in 1523 by Jan Gossaert. This new acquisition, although a copy, presents considerable painterly qualities.
