Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the issue of the consequences of war on the environment, analyzing the impact that both interstate and civil wars have on the environment. In the introduction, the incident international legal framework regarding the protection of the environment in wartime is analyzed, establishing the applicability of some norms related to international humanitarian, environmental and criminal law. Also, there are a number of resolutions of the UN and other international organizations on this matter, as well as a relatively poor jurisprudence of international courts that are referred quite rarely regarding environmental protection. As a result of the study, it is found that military activities have a particularly negative impact on the environment both before the outbreak of the conflict, during but also after its conclusion. Armies are heavy consumers of raw materials, fossil fuels leaving an obvious footprint on the environment. Military conflicts, once triggered, affect all the supporting elements of life (water, air, soil) contributing to accentuating the phenomenon of climate warming and affecting the vision of the sustainable development of modern society in all three of its aspects (social, economic, environmental).
