Between Ornaments and Universals? A Beginner’s Reflection about the Blind Spots of Slovak Intellectuals (Not Only) Regarding the Countryside

This review essay analyzes two non-academic books focusing on the attitudes and thinking of modern Slovaks living outside cities: Samo Marec's "How to Get Rid of Despair from Slovakia..." and Juraj Buzalka's "Post-Peasants: Slovak People’s Protest." The author examines the books' strengths and weaknesses from a social science perspective, highlighting how they partially address the lack of anthropological books on the Slovak countryside. The review explores the authors' shared concern with understanding the political sentiments of primarily rural Slovaks and their frustration with the political practices of non-urban populations. It also discusses the methodological approaches employed by each author, comparing Marec's applied case study approach with Buzalka's more theoretically grounded approach. The essay concludes by questioning the absence of social anthropology on the Slovak countryside and suggesting this absence contributes to important blind spots within the local intellectual elite's understanding of rural issues.
