Summary/Abstract: This analysis is dedicated to the narrative “Überfahrt” and focuses in particular on the concept of hybridity. The analysis aims to show how war and exile have had a lasting impact on the protagonist's identity development and ultimately contribute to the formation of a hybrid identity. Although hybridity has become known through postcolonial studies, it was also intensively discussed among German exiles in America in the 1930s, especially in connection with considerations of identity, belonging and adaptation in a foreign cultural space. Anna Seghers' reflections on exile and identity show clear parallels to central concepts of postcolonial studies. Although these ideas were not explicitly formulated in these terms at the time, they can be interpreted as precursors to today's debates on hybridity and cultural intersections.
