Summary/Abstract: Conducting criminal proceedings within a reasonable time is an essential principle of the legal system and a fundamental human right guaranteed by international treaties and national legislation. This principle not only ensures fair access to justice, but also contributes to protecting the fundamental rights of persons involved in criminal proceedings by preventing abuse and unjustified delays. Respecting reasonable time limits is crucial for maintaining trust in the judicial system and ensuring fair, efficient and transparent proceedings. In determining the reasonable time limit for the completion of criminal proceedings, it is necessary to take into account a number of clear and well-defined criteria which are essential for assessing the conformity of the proceedings with this principle. These criteria are used to analyze the complexity of the case, the behaviour of the parties involved, the conduct of the judicial authorities and the importance of the proceedings for the persons directly involved. The impact on the accused or victim will also be assessed, given that delays in proceedings can cause serious harm to these categories of persons.
