Forgotten words in the mental lexicon of students - material for the school dictionary

Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes vocabulary unknown or less familiar to students, excerpted from literary works represented in the reader for the sixth grade of elementary school. The collected material is classified, analyzed, quantitatively and statistically processed. The following classification criteria were taken: a) the status of the lexeme in relation to the modern literary language (the following were distinguished: historicisms, archaisms, obsolete colloquial words, dialectisms, poeticisms and rare words), b) language levels, c) the origin of the word, and d) thematic groups. The research conducted is part of a wider project (under the auspices of Matica srpska) entitled School Dictionary of Forgotten Words of the Serbian Language, which aims to create a dictionary of unknown words intended for elementary school students.
