Summary/Abstract: This article revisits the themes of research goals, criteria, and quality in qualitative research, twenty years after the author's initial publication on the subject. It provides an overview of the contemporary landscape of qualitative research, highlighting the evolution from a dissident approach to a recognized and evolving research stream. Despite its growth, qualitative research faces increasing divergence across theoretical and methodological dimensions. The article explores efforts to define criteria for assessing research quality, noting the lack of consensus and presenting various perspectives on these criteria. Recommendations from the Society for Qualitative Inquiry in Psychology (APA) for design, review, and reporting standards are discussed. The conclusion emphasizes the need for standards and guidelines to establish credibility and highlights the ongoing search for definitive criteria.
