Finland and Sweden in NATO’s maritime security policy – the Baltic Sea as the alliance’s “lake”?

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the role of Sweden and Finland in NATO's maritimesecurity policy, drawing attention to the key challenges and threats that have emergedin the Baltic Sea basin after the Russian aggression against Ukraine. By joining theAlliance, the two Scandinavian countries nearly complete their encirclement of theBaltic Sea, helping to consolidate the Alliance's defence efforts in intelligence,technology and naval operations. The cooperation between the two countries' fleetsand their ability to harmonize their activities with NATO will increase the level ofsecurity in the Baltic basin, changing the existing political and military imbalance,which has so far been beneficial for Russia. As a result, the Baltic Sea could become a"NATO lake", which will increase stability and security in the region. The article poses, akey research question: What role will Sweden and Finland play in NATO's maritimesecurity policy in the Baltic Sea basin? The main objective of the article is to define thisrole and to analyze the impact of the accession of these two countries on regionalsecurity dynamics, especially in the context of Russia's increased military activity.
