Summary/Abstract: Despite Sweden’s reputation as a paragon of welfare state ideals and gender equality, female entrepreneurship has remained largely marginalized within mainstream economic and historical narratives. Although women have long participated in entrepreneurial activity—particularly within trade and service sectors—their contributions have often been rendered invisible due to entrenched conceptions of entrepreneurship as a male-dominated, continuous, and expansion-driven endeavor. Prevailing economic discourses and scholarly research have historically prioritized largescale export industries, thereby neglecting forms of female entrepreneurship that are frequently characterized by flexibility, temporality, and close ties to the domestic sphere. Gender-focused historical studies have similarly tended to emphasize women’s roles as wage earners rather than as autonomous business actors. This oversight has resulted in the underutilization of a significant reservoir of developmental potential. A historical lens reveals the necessity of adopting a more nuanced and inclusive understanding of women’s economic contributions, particularly in sectors traditionally classified as “feminine.”
