Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the results of a study on the process of adaptation of older women to life without a spouse, or to single life. The study involved 230 respondents over the age of 65 in six cities in Sisak - Moslavina County. The respondents were divided into two groups. The first group consisted of older women who lost their spouse up to six months ago (the grieving process is still ongoing), and the second group consisted of older women who lost their spouse for three years or more (the grieving process should be completed). The study was conducted in 2024. Based on the results obtained, it was shown that the respondents in both groups had difficulty adapting to single life, or that they assessed their adaptation to life without a spouse as poor and very poor. Furthermore, the length of life without a partner does not significantly affect the level of adaptation success, because in both groups of respondents the adaptation process is still ongoing and the outcome is uncertain. The economic situation and life after the earthquake with catastrophic consequences, which resulted in a slower pace of reconstruction compared to the expectations and needs of the general population, have a significant impact on the above.
