Summary/Abstract: Various scientific fields analyze issues and problems of gender studies, i.e. the origin of gender differences. Giddens (2009) argues that the origin of gender differences should be sought in the study of gender socialization – learning about gender through the family or media. The interdisciplinary nature of the analysis explores and elaborates precisely these original elements of media representations of gender differences and their influence on very important social subsystems of politics and security in order to analyze the possibilities of creating and implementing purposeful and functional gender policies and protection systems that will be on the path to creating safe communities for every individual. Starting from the elementary media functions of warning about various forms of threats to social interests, media representations, limited political and social instruments, are aimed as a supplement to social and state instances. Such media functions and roles have the possibility of promoting new or strengthening existing constructions of gender differences, attitudes or ideas. Respecting such media possibilities of emphasizing socially engaged topics and shaping new and existing social attitudes and public opinion, which can support state and political instances and strategies in creating non-violent social environments, the research is aimed at analyzing the methods and forms of media reporting on cases of femicide in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The analysis starts from the hypothesis that the “obsessive thematization” of violence in the media is in most cases for the purpose of entertainment and profit, and in rare cases, for the purpose of emancipation (Praskač-Salčin, Brkić-Šmigoc, 2024). The selective presentation of femicide as an alarming social problem excludes any form of analytical frame with specialist and expert instances as sources of information that would help in the adequate understanding and prevention of the problem of violence against women and the shaping of public opinion. Media reporting on violence against women and femicide can influence the recreation of dominant social attitudes and prejudices, the engagement of state institutions, and ultimately, the creation of an adequate attitude towards this problem and the analysis of institutional and security policies aimed at combating all forms of gender-based violence.
