Summary/Abstract: This article examines the identification of adolescents and young adults with selected music subcultures. It considers the influences of gender, age groups, and proximity to urban agglomerations. Modes of identification include style of dress, hairstyle, general appearance, concert attendance, social media activity, group affiliations with similarly subculturally identified friends, and the use of common slang and colloquial expressions specific to the subculture. The research explores how modes of identification vary among different subcultures. The research confirms a gender imbalance favoring men and refutes the notion that there is a higher prevalence of subculture identification in urban areas. Modes of identification differ significantly by genre, creating distinct identification patterns. The authors argue that explicit subcultural identification, even when associated with values and cultures that differ from the mainstream, presents fewer social challenges and threats than values and cultural differences that are not explicitly recognized and therefore remain unknown.
