Summary/Abstract: This comprehensive volume, including 29 richly illustrated papers, is an effect of a scientific plenary session which took place at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun in autumn of 2014. It can be placed among a very few studies that aim at ambitious and complementary treatment of architecture research as the basic action related with architecture monuments conservation. The idea behind both the scientific meeting and the volume which resulted from the conference also show the necessity of interdisciplinary character of architecture research and its meaning for the process of conservation. The discussed collection of papers includes texts on brick, stone and wood architecture. It is worth mentioning that the volume covers new statements referring to timber as historical building material. The book discusses both classical examination of “invasive” type and “non-invasive” modern methods (the GIS inventory, radar examination), what provokes reflection over their effectiveness in full recognition of the examined monument. The volume brings new important historic arrangements (issues of dating arcades and terraced entrances), which proves that architectural studies belong to fundamental research, also in terms of history recognition.A certain part of the texts collected in the volume refers to teaching architectural studies. It is worth drawing the attention at the fact that the first stages of these studies (historical query, monument inventory – elaborating inventory files) are an essential issue of teaching art history, at the University of Wrocław among others. Therefore we can expect graduates of this specialisation to be more active in the fascinating studies over historic architecture described in this volume, with satisfying effects for both the very discipline and monuments.
