Summary/Abstract: The paper points to the ever-present violence against women, which takes on a new modus operandi from day to day. Women become victims of violence by their partners, by persons close to them, by persons who have already abused them, by persons towards whom they are in a subordinate or dependent relationship, as well as in all other cases when there are circumstances that indicate the fact that it is gender-based violence. Femicide is the most extreme form of gender-based violence against women. The Croatian legislator made a big step forward and singled out femicide as a special form of aggravated murder due to gender-based murder and the progression of the most extreme form of violence against women. The Law on Amendments to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Croatia, which has been in force since 2 April 2024, in Chapter X entitled "Criminal Offences against Life and Body", a new criminal offence of aggravated murder "Aggravated murder of a female person" is incriminated by a special Article 111a. With the aforementioned amendments to the Criminal Code in Article 87, paragraph 32, gender-based violence against women is defined as violence that is directed at a woman because she is a woman or that disproportionately affects women. The adopted definition is in line with the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence. The paper analyzes the criminal law provisions of femicide as a criminal offense and analyzes and researches femicide as a gender-based murder of a female person in judicial practice.
