Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the aria “Giusto Ciel”, written by Luigi Cherubini for Antonina Campi for the revival of the German-language adaptation of his Lodoïska at the Theater an der Wien in 1805. In this work, the composer highlighted the finest qualities of Campi’s vocal and acting talent - her lively coloratura soprano with its high tessitura, her strong and resonant upper register, and the expressive recitative passages embedded within the aria - while simultaneously concealing potential weaknesses through relatively brief cantabile sections and the absence of the cantar di sbalzo technique. While not abandoning virtuosity, Cherubini ultimately subordinated the aria to expressive aims.
