Summary/Abstract: Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) is a military doctrine that emerged during the Cold War and became one of the key principles of nuclear deterrence. This doctrine predicts that any use of nuclear weapons by one side would provoke a retaliatory strike of equal or greater destructive force, resulting in mutual devastation. Thus, it serves as one of the core principles of nuclear deterrence. The nuclear weapons used by the United States during World War II caused such widespread devastation that they effectively ended the war, leading to significant shifts in international security strategies. This study examines the MAD doctrine, which arose from the nuclear balance between the U.S. and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, within its historical context and discusses its relevance in the 21st century. The effects of nuclear proliferation and scientific-technological advancements on the MAD doctrine are also evaluated. As a result of this study, it is concluded that the MAD doctrine still holds a deterrent effect regarding the use of nuclear weapons today. However, due to the changing security environment and evolving threat landscapes, it is argued that the doctrine needs to be updated. Moreover, the development of alternative mechanisms to prevent nuclear proliferation is deemed necessary.
