Summary/Abstract: The objective of our article is to show the role of the mother tongue in the learning of a foreign language. This is Arabic in the course of written comprehension in French as a foreign language among Algerian pupils of the 1st year of average. We have found that these learners cannot understand a written document in French and try to translate it word by word into Arabic to grasp its meaning. To do this, we have chosen the questionnaire as an investigative tool that will be intended for learners and in which we ask them if they use their language 1 to understand the content of a written medium during the written comprehension session. . As a result, the participants argue that they use their language 1 whether for the dictionary or for all that they have acquired as strategies in L1 in order to understand a text written in FLE. We will end our article with didactic ideas allowing these students to overcome their difficulties in written comprehension in French as a foreign language.
