Summary/Abstract: This paper presents an analysis and systematization of the names of Paralympic events and sports disciplines containing the "para" component in Slovak. It identifies and explores linguistic ambiguities and issues associated with the use of "para" within Slovak Paralympic terminology. The analysis primarily focuses on the linguistic competition between following variants: (a) the lexical variants paralympiáda/paraolympiáda, (b) the orthographic variants p/Paralympijské hry, (c) names of sports disciplines with the "para" component formally used as a prefix or attribute (paracycling/para cycling), and (d) multiword naming variants incorporating "para" to describe disciplines or athletes (e.g., parastolná tenistka/para stolná tenistka/stolná paratenistka as translations of para table tennis player). The paper raises previously undiscussed questions regarding Slovak Paralympic terminology. The analysis considers key extralinguistic factors, linguistic practices, and established orthographic rules to propose concrete recommendations for improving and standardizing Slovak Paralympic terminology.
