Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore certain significant problems with the officially codified punctuation rules for the Slovak language related to comma. Firstly, the principles of the well-formed orthographic system are introduced as a methodological basis for a rational discussion about the possibilities of an orthographic reform. Next section deals with general arguments in favour of a simplification of the official comma rules for the Slovak language and it is followed by the analysis of the particular formal problems of the punctuation system. With regard to identified problems I argue that we should change the classification system of the rules, reduce some redundant elements and make the rules more specific, so they are functionally justified, intuitive, and unambiguous. The paper also includes specific proposals for a formal simplification of the rules to improve user friendliness of the official Slovak punctuation rules.
