Summary/Abstract: This article presents a new educational approach to teaching the discipline of stereometry by creating a 3D application working in virtual reality (VR) with and without immersion. The application is developed using Java3D. A new algorithm that uses elements of Cavalieri’s method of indivisibles and Isaac Newton’s method of limits is applied to generate regular polygon-based geometric figures, such as prisms and pyramids. A traditional method using trigonometry and 2D/3D graphics extrusion generates geometric shapes such as cone, cylinder and torus. The application interface uses 2D techniques, such as buttons, slider and text field/area, and 3D technique – navigation sensors, through a joystick. The new application will improve the way in which students gain new knowledge and will create a closer relationship between teachers, students, and VR.
