Summary/Abstract: Terrorism in Italy has passed through various stages in the 20th and 21st centuries – from anarchist attacks in the early 20th century, through politically motivated violence by left-wing and right-wing extremist groups during the „lead years” (late 1960s to early 1980s), to modern threats from global Islamist extremism. This report examines the historical development of terrorist activity in Italy, the main organisations, their ideologies and objectives, the known attacks, the impact of terror on society and politics, and the measures taken by the Italian authorities to counter it
