Summary/Abstract: As of today, both the European environment and the environmental policy of the EU are at a tipping point. Based on the findings of the latest ‘State of the Environment’ report (SOER 2020) of the European Environment Agency it is clear that incremental changes have resulted in progress in some areas, but the EU will not achieve its 2030 goals without urgent action during the next 10 years. The answer of the Union is the European Green Deal; it is a new growth strategy that aims to transform the EU into a fair and prosperous society, with a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy where there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050 and where economic growth is decou-pled from resource use.
