The Mediating Role of Organizational Culture in the Effect of Democratic and Authoritarian Manager Styles on Employee Motivation: A Research Study

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this research is to determine the mediating role of organizational culture in the effect of democratic and authoritarian manager styles on the motivation of branch employees in the banking sector. The sample of the study consists of 407 employees from bank branches based in Istanbul. The survey was conducted face-to-face between July and September 2024 and includes demographic characteristics as well as scales for democratic manager style, authoritarian manager style, motivation, and organizational culture, with data collected using a five-point Likert scale. For data analysis, SPSS 21.0 software was utilized, including frequency analysis, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, reliability, correlation, regression, and confirmatory factor analyses. The bootstrap method was applied to identify the mediating role. As a result of the research, it was found that the research variables significantly differed based on demographic factors. According to the correlation results, as the authoritarian manager style increases, both motivation and organizational culture show a low level of decrease, while the democratic manager style shows a moderate level of decrease. In contrast, as the democratic manager style increases, motivation shows a low level of increase, while organizational culture shows a moderate level of increase. The regression results indicate that organizational culture has a mediating role in the effect of both democratic and authoritarian manager styles on employee motivation.
