Summary/Abstract: The lexeme natura is mentioned in the various texts of the jurists of the classical era, as well as in numerous imperial laws and other post-classical sources. Obviously for the imperial chancellery this concept was important in the phraseology of justifying the legal statements granted through the imperial constitutions. The continuity and differences in its use compared to classical law are explored. Its usage in canon law is also analyzed: the Decretum Gratiani (Concordia Discordantium Canonum); the Decretales Gregorii IX seu Liber Extra, as well as its relation to the modern Church Magisterium on the idea of non-negotiable principles and values in the legal structure of modern societies.
