Summary/Abstract: The word “icon” comes from the Greek language and means image or portrait. During the period of formation of Christian art in Byzantium, this term was used for any image of Christ, St. Virgin Mary, saint, angel or event from sacred history, regardless of whether it was painted or sculpted, movable or monumental. After the establishment of Christianity and the establishment of a complete pictorial system in church painting (directly related to church ritual), the specific place and function of both the mural decoration and the easel icon was determined.
