Summary/Abstract: DNA is the genetic material found in all cells of the body. The beginnings of genetics, or rather the study of its laws, can be found in the 19th century, when it is associated with the name of the prominent Czech scientist Johann Gregor Mendel. This Augustinian monk from the Brno monastery was involved in hybridization experiments in plants in the second half of the 19th century. In connection with DNA itself, the names of James Watson and Francis Crick are most often associated, who received the Nobel Prize for its discovery. The method of DNA analysis helps to reveal the perpetrators of not only the most serious crimes In my article, I will focus on mapping the path of DNA analysis from initial experiments to the method used for individual identification. I will also reflect on the place of this method in contemporary criminology and on the prediction of the development of this method.
