Summary/Abstract: On June 26, 1967, at a consistory in the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome, Bishop Karol Wojtyła received the cardinal insignia. As the Bishop of Krakow, he sought per- mission from the communist authorities to build new churches. Between 1968 and 1977, he celebrated Christmas midnight masses in parishes that requested them, particularly in the housing estates of Azory, Krowodrza, Mistrzejowice, and Wzgórza Krzesławickie. During his sermons, he emphasized the necessity for Christ, as a symbolic citizen, to have the right to a roof over his head and to be born on an altar in dignified conditions. Cardinal Wojtyła›s pastoral commitment and firm at- titude played a decisive role in ensuring the construction of these churches, which continue to serve as places of prayer and community gatherings to this day.
