Jerome's Vita sancti Pauli primi eremitae in Croatian Glagolitic texts

Summary/Abstract: Jerome’s Vita sancti Pauli primi eremitae appears in Croatian Glagolitic literature in a number of translations and texts of different provenance. Pauline Glagolitic priests certainly contributed to spreading the legend of St. Paul, because they worshiped the cult of Paul the Hermit, and used Old Church Slavonic and Glagolitic script in liturgy. Textological research presented in this article shows that Glagolitic literature contains translations of Jerome’s Vita sancti Pauli from Greek and Latin. Texts appearing in two manuscripts in miscellanies from the 15th and 16th century, specifically in The Academy Glagolitic fragment sign. 32b and in Žgombić’s Miscellany, belong to the Greek tradition of Paul’s hagiography (BHG 1467). These two legends about Paul the Hermit belong to the same redaction and are closely related. The second translation is based on Jerome’s Latin original of the legend (BHL 6596) and appears in the same version with many lexical differences in three Croatian Glagolitic breviaries, the Second Breviary of Novi Vinodolski (1495), the printed Breviary of Blaž Baromić (1493) and the Brozić Breviary (1561). The Pauline Second Breviary of Novi Vinodolski contains a unique text of the Translation of Paul the Hermit’s Relics, a translation from the Latin original (BHL 6598). A paraphrase of the legend about Paul the Hermit also appears in the Collection of Sermons by Nikola Belić from the 18th century. In comparison to other Croatian Glagolitic hagiographies, Paul’s legend stands out because of the number of texts and the diversity of the tradition. Overall, Jerome’s legend about Paul the First Hermit was popular and widely read in Croatia in the Middle Ages. The article includes the first ever publication of the Latin transliteration of the earliest appearance of the legend in a Glagolitic breviary, namely the printed Breviary of Blaž Baromić (1493).
