Language courteousness in "The Teutonic Knights" by Henryk Sienkiewicz

Summary/Abstract: This article contains an analysis of sings of language etiquette crea¬ted in The Teutonic Knights – the last of great historical novels by Henryk Sienkiewicz. The system of formulas and good manners presented in the novel is diffe¬rentiated and includes: 1. forms of address (titles, proper and common names; grammar expressions, e.g. pronouns: my ‘we’, ty, wy, ‘you’); 2. formulas referring to a particular pragmatic situation (e.g. greeting, farewell, swearing). This research also includes descriptions of extralinguistic behaviour.
