Summary/Abstract: The Croatian writer, philologist, translator, theatrologist and journalist, Nikola Andrić has most often been written about in the context of his anniversaries. Examining Andrić’s diverse literary, theatrical, and cultural contributions, numerous critics emphasize that he was a polyglot and erudite whose work in literary history and essay writing surpassed his fiction. His contributions to the development of Croatian theater life are particularly highlighted, both in Zagreb and in Osijek, where he was the founder and first director of the Croatian National Theatre. In the histories of Croatian literature, Andrić is only marginally mentioned, with some key information about his rich cultural work. Exceptionally, Mate Ujević, in the first volume of Hrvatska enciklopedija (Croatian Encyclopedia, 1941) and Slavko Ježić, in his Hrvatska književnost (Croatian Literature, 1944), highlight Andrić’s work as a critic and literary historian, his contributions to the study of the Croatian literary language, as well as his efforts in publishing folk songs. They particularly emphasize his initiative in establishing Zabavna biblioteka (Entertainment Library), which published over six hundred volumes of world literature. In recent times, several significant contributions have been made to the study of Andrić’s work, including Katica Čorkalo’s study “Svestrani naš Vukovarac Nikola Andrić” (“Our Versatile Fellow Citizen from Vukovar, Nikola Andrić”, 2011) and Vesna Vujić’s dissertation Jezik i jezikoslovlje Nikole Andrića (The Language and Linguistics of Nikola Andrić, 2014). A major contribution to the reception of Nikola Andrić was the Scientific Conference on Nikola Andrić, held in Vukovar, Zagreb and Pécs from October 20 to 22, 2022, as the 19th conference in the series Hrvatski književni povjesničari (Croatian Literary Historians). The conference was subsequently accompanied by the publication of the Proceedings on Nikola Andrić (edited by T. Maštrović), which encompasses around thirty scientific and professional contributions regarding this distinguished scholar and multifaceted cultural figure.
