Summary/Abstract: In our study, based on focus group interviews with students and parents, we address the question of how distance learning affected disadvantaged families, i.e. how they coped with the outlined challenges. The data collection took place directly at the end of the first wave of the pandemic, after the spring closures in the counties of Baranya, Csongrád-Csanád and Győr-Moson-Sopron. The restrictions imposed during the first wave of the coronavirus epidemic, such as in our case the ordering of a digital curriculum outside the classroom, highlighted the fact that disadvantaged families have few digital devices and that the lack of internet access at home is an even bigger problem. The lack of access is persistent and affects generations. An important consequence is that children can receive little help from their parents who have little experience in the online world. We found that middle-class families were able to cope more easily with the challenges of learning at home for several reasons. Disadvantaged young people already seem to show less activity in the digital world, are less experienced users, and also receive less external support from peers and family. The Roma living in the segregated area had the hardest time adapting to the challenges of digital education and learning at home.
