Summary/Abstract: For starters, it is crucial to define which Yugoslavia we are referring to. Although it is very common to view both states as failures, they still symbolize very different phenomena and eras. Consequently, their integration into historiography and memory might differ greatly, simply because the general assessment of those periods could be positive or negative. Secondly, we must make a clear distinction between the various social spheres we are looking at. Both Yugoslavias have a historiography, and even if historians are just as prone to disagreements as non-experts, their approach to Yugoslavia as a past and their understanding of its legacy should naturally be very different from popular memory or individual nostalgia. Having said that, I will not dig too deep into either. As for historiography, I do not think that the minute details of interest to historians really matter for social memory; neither can those nuances change the more general perception of the two Yugoslavias. If socially meaningful change were to occur, that would happen with a more general reappraisal of what Yugoslavia was.
