Summary/Abstract: In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic and urged governments to take urgent action. In the following two years, 762,791,152 people became ill and at least 6,897,025 people died from the disease. Violence against healthcare workers (HCWs) is an unfortunate reality in medical practices worldwide. The WHO reports that up to 38% of HCWs experience scenarios of brutality at least once during their careers, and 16 times more than in other professional fields. Based on a review of the terms “violence” and “COVID-19”, we conducted a PubMed research search on their titles or abstracts. More than 43% of HCWs experienced violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. The most common form of violence among HCWs was verbal violence, and the most common perpetrators were relatives of patients. Age under 40, female gender and night shift work increase the risk of exposure to violence. Most HCWs who were exposed to violent incidents stated that they did not report it.
