Summary/Abstract: Devoted to the question of Greek borrowings in coastal Serbo-Croatian, the paper discusses the route these borrowings took, i.e. whether they were borrowed in Serbo-Croatian directly from Greek or filtered through Dalmato-Romance. From the point of view of accentuation, mediation can arguably be seen from a particular accent type, namely Gr. ἔγκαυστος > Lat. ENCAÚSTU, where the accent is always protracted in the Latin word. Since both Greek and Dalmato-Romance borrowings preserve the place of original accent, the question is then which type do they reflect: the Greek or the Latin type? Having examined the available examples we conclude, with Vinja 1967, that coastal Serbo-Croatian must have borrowed its Greek through the Dalmato-Romance medium.
