Local Social Cohesion within the Polish City. A Pilot Study

Summary/Abstract: This article presents the stages of constructing the author’s social cohesionindex and a proposal for its use in social research. As a side effect of theanalyses presented in the article, the paper presents a characterisationof local social cohesion within a medium-sized city such as Chrzanów,based on a pilot survey (N=505). It demonstrates that different patterns ofsocial cohesion operate within the city, underpinned by urban, historicalor industrial differences that can be identifi ed within the city. The articlehighlights a theoretical perspective that defi nes social cohesion in isolationfrom policy objectives (cohesion policy, social policy). It concludes by pointingout the potential benefi ts of the proposed approach to the study of local socialcohesion, together with the prospect of broadening the research questions aswell as verifying the results obtained in studies of other cities.
