Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of soothing sub-dimension of interpersonal emotion regulation strategies and perceived romantic relationship quality on psychological distress. A total of 230 adults between the ages of 18-65 who were in a romantic relationship and selected by convenience sampling method participated in the study. ‘Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Scale’, “Perceived Romantic Relationship Quality Scale” and “Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale” were used in the study. According to the results of the study, the level of use of the soothing strategy predicted the level of psychological distress significantly and positively [F(1, 229) = 5.49, ß= .15, p< 05]; the level of perceived romantic relationship quality predicted the level of psychological distress significantly and negatively (F(1, 229) = 14. 60, ß= -.25, p< .001); the level of soothing did not predict the level of perceived romantic relationship quality in a statistically significant way [F(1, 229) = 0.55, ß= .05, p = .461]. Mediation analysis results showed that perceived romantic relationship quality did not have a significant mediating effect on the relationship between soothing and psychological distress (b= -.0124, SH=.0191, 95% CI[-.0536, .0228]). It is thought that the findings of the study may guide therapists in improving individuals' emotion regulation strategies and reducing their psychological distress.
