Summary/Abstract: Şerbethanes, although the exact date of origin is not clear, şerbethaneler in the Ottoman Empire were sometimes used as alternatives to taverns or winehouses serving a similar function. Described as places where beverages that were not legally or religiously prohibited were sold, şerbethanes may have been used in place of taverns due to social or legal preferences. However, it was expected hat şerbethanes would transition to their primary identity within the context of the modernization movements of the 19th century and the competition brought by the gedik system established by the Ottomans. This transition was not immediate but rather attempted gradually. This study focuses on şerbethanes and Armenian şeerbethanes within the şerbethanes tradesmen in Istanbul between 1876 and 1900. Information about the emergence, use, and spatial location of şerbethanes is evaluated in light of archival documents. Additionally, the study examines the regions where these şerbethanes were predominantly located and compares their proportions with other nonMuslim şerbethanes. Based on the data obtained, the focus is on şerbethanes in Istanbul that generally functioned as taverns or wineries during 1876-1900, with a particular emphasis on Armenian şerbethanes.
