Summary/Abstract: The complexity of the international system always creates space for small and medium-sized countries to protect their interests. The success of a state depends on specific circumstances and on the state's skill (organization, focus, connectivity, external support, and other factors), as well as many other elements of the given case. The best illustration of this is the European Union. Provided that a country successfully adapts internally to EU membership—meaning the application of the acquis communautaire, or more broadly, the "Europeanization" of EU policies and, through them, of its international relations—a new model emerges. In today’s Europe, size is no longer equivalent to power.
