Summary/Abstract: This article develops the concept proposed by Alexandra Schneider and Vinzenz Hediger, who address the question of whether film is a scalable medium and, if so, to what extent. The author offers a revised and modified version of their concept, distinguishing between scaling in the spatial, temporal, and narrative domains. Each strand of his considerations is based on elements of film history, particularly in the field of film format studies, but also refers to the context of recent audiovisual culture. In each case, a comprehensive analysis of scaling phenomena is undertaken, showing that they are rarely purely technical in nature. Furthermore, when viewed in a broader context, social, cultural, or economic aspects become clearly apparent. It is argued that the scalability of audiovisual media has been present since the beginnings of cinema and constitutes an elementary component of the production and reception of media content. In light of these considerations, it can be posited that the film medium is not merely scalable, but that scalability is an inherent quality of the medium in the present times.
