Summary/Abstract: The paper examines two issues of the Vasárnapi Ujság, primarily from the point of view of the relationship between images and text. In one of the first issues of the magazine, which existed between 1854 and 1921, Sándor Petőfi’s poem A Tisza was published, accompanied by a pictorial illustration; in the much later issue of October 1905, a photo report on Kálmán Mikszáth’s house in Horpács was published, accompanied by a commentary by the writer. The two issues, published nearly 50 years apart, illustrate the evolution and development of the illustrated magazine, illustration techniques and visual culture of the time, as well as its dilemmas.
